| In Switzerland, the development of hydroelectric dams started at the end of the XIX century. Alfred Stucky was one of the early pioneers who first developed the double curvature arch dam theory (see his Thesis) and, in 1926, he founded STUCKY Consulting Engineers.
From 1926 to 1951, STUCKY participated successfully in a large number of studies on dams in Switzerland and abroad. The company quickly became internationally recognized as an authority in the field of dam design (concrete gravity arch dams, earth and rock fill dams) and appurtenant works (spillways, diversion works and other hydraulic constructions). During this period, not less than 28 dam projects were completed including the Dixence (Switzerland - 1929), Beni-Bahdel (Algeria - 1934), Ben Metir (Tunisia – 1945). The period from 1951 to 1976 was a great age for dam building, especially in Switzerland, where many prestigious civil projects were carried out, such as Mauvoisin dam (1951), Grande Dixence dam (1951), Moiry dam (1954), Luzzone dam (1958) and many others. During this period, STUCKY was involved in work abroad, particularly in Iran with the Latiyan dam (1963), Zayandeh Rud dam (1963) and Jiroft dam (1970). In 1979, STUCKY became a public limited company, under the name of STUCKY Consulting Engineers Ltd. The company shareholders are made up of the staff (51%), the Swiss electricity utility EOS (Energie Ouest Suisse) (39%) and the Stucky family (10%). The activities of STUCKY have expanded into other fields such as irrigation systems, drinking water supply, foundation works, reinforced and prestressed concrete constructions, industrial buildings, electro and hydro mechanical equipment and numerical modelling. In order to mark this diversification of activities, in 2003, the company changed its name to STUCKY Ltd |
